Poor percentage play
Poker tournaments can be extremely artificial. Take the following scenario: You hold AD AC and have only 1.000 left in chips last in hand. There are only three of you left and the prizes are £5000, £3000, £2000. The other two players each have 99,500 chips. They each go all in before you ever make a move.
It is mathematically correct to pass. You are big odds on to win the pot, but so what? You will still only have 3,000 in chips. The winner of the side pot will have 197,000 in chips. It will still be an up mountain battle. But you will almost certainly come second, if you pass. Risking £1000 for a tiny chance of winning a further £2000 is a poor percentage play.

Watch out for second half goals at Hereford
Hereford take on Stevenage Borough in Monday night’s live televised Conference match.
One can hardly mention Hereford without thinking about their famous FA Cup tie against Newcastle United in the early 70s but they are keen to recapture their league status evidenced by their 2-1 victory over Aldershot in their last outing.
Stevenage a moved up to fourth place after easing past Canvey Island last week but we think home advantage will make the difference but only when the game opens up after the interval Bet Direct are offering even money for more goals to be scored in the second half and we will be having a few quid on this unusual but fun bet.

Raising on a Morton's Fork
You have 9D8D. There has been a bet before the flop which you called. The flop is AD 9C 3D. There is a bet. Against one opponent you must have either the best made hand or the only flush draw.
Such a possibility I refer to as an example of Morton’s Fork, after the income tax inspector in medieval times. He worked on the principle that if a member of the gentry were living in apparent poverty, he must be concealing his wealth. If he were living high on the hog, then he could again afford heavy taxes.
In such circumstances you are entitled to raise. You are either winning or have a strong drawing hand. Your opponent needs such as A-8 or A-A to be favourite against your holding. Even if the worst comes to the worst, you are better than 2/1 against winning the pot.

United best in Carling test
The Carling Cup final from the Millennium Stadium throws up the rather unusual pairing of Manchester United and Wigan.
While the aristocrats of Old Trafford are well used to showpiece occasions the Premiership upstarts are in their first senior final.
The Red Devils are strong favourites and we can’t any logical reason why they will leave Wales empty handed.
There’s no tempting odds for a straight United win but Bet Direct will give you 3/1 for half-time/Manchester United and that’s the bet we will recommend.

Sunday's big FA Cup fifth round tie
Sunday's big FA Cup fifth round tie sees Aston Villa welcoming Manchester City to Villa Park.
Neither side have shown any sort of consistency this season and in many ways it’s a toss of a coin as to how they will play on the day.
David O’Leary’s side have improved a little since the turn of the year but they are a club who never seem more than two games from slumping back into a crisis.
Indeed, they were beaten last time out at home by a less than inspirational Newcastle side.
However, City's away form is easily the worst in the top 12 with just 11 points to show from a possible 36 although they have a 3-1 win over Villa this season under their belt.
We think these two sides will be too close to call so we’ll be taking some of Bet Direct’s 11/5 for the draw.
Happy New Year to all our readers
There's no better time to review your betting strategy and rules than the beginning of a New Year so for the year 2006 our experts have put together 6 GOLDEN BETTING RULES all with the aim of winning you more and losing less in 2006
(1)Keep a record of ALL your bets. Ideally in an Excel spreadsheet it will help you understand what sports and events you are best at and most importantly keep a record of how much you win or lose.
(2)Decide at the beginning of the day which events you are going to bet in/on. Don't let results later in the day change this as this will inevitably mean you are starting to chase losses.
(3)Don't make losing days worse. No one can win every day and part of long term success is maximising winning days and minimising losing ones.
(4)Always shop around for the best value. Getting 9/4 instead of 2/1 makes a big difference if you do it many times a year.
(5)Spread your risk if you fancy two horses in a race split stakes.
(6)Don't bet if you are low on funds, tired, or stressed.
