Benfica too good for Celtic

Well, Monday night provided yet more success for us with Manchester City beating Middlesbrough but there is no resting on laurels here.

Wednesday night's Champions League football offers some delicious matches and one of the most intriguing is Celtic's trip to Lisbon to play Benfica in Group F.

The Hoops last played Benfica in the European Cup in season 1969/70 and after winning the first-leg 3-0 in Glasgow, they lost by the same score in the return game and only went though on the toss of a coin - which was the curious way they decided tied games in those days.

A fortnight ago, Celtic beat the Portuguese club in their Group F game by three clear goals at home so how will this match go? Perfect symmetry?

Benfica, like most Portuguese clubs, have no great history of travelling but they are very strong in front of their own fans.

The Parkhead side have never won away from home in the Champions League which gives us the confidence to take Betterbet.com's 8/11 on a Benfica win.

In the other group game Manchester United take on FC Copenhagen in Denmark but are too poorly priced to bother with but if you are looking for a double, take Arsenal at 4/11 to beat CSKA Moscow at the Emirates Stadium.

City's home form to be upheld

When you consider your options on Monday night's Premiership match between Manchester City and Middlesbrough take a moment to reflect back on our advice for Sunday's tense West Ham v Blackburn game at Upton Park.

In tipping the Hammers at 11/8 with Betterbet.com, our words were: 'We have a gut feeling - no more - that the Hammers will get it right this time in front of their disgruntled fans.'

Happily for us - and Alan Pardew - the Irons came through and it is that same gut feeling that takes us to tip under-fire Stuart Pearce to calm the nerves of his board and supporters by getting a win against Boro.

City are enduring a somewhat wretched time of it this season with Pearce - a one time candidate for the England job - the latest boss to have his future questioned.

At Eastlands they're unbeaten in four games, haven't conceded a goal and have claimed the scalp of Arsenal but it is their disastrous away form that has heaped pressure on the man still known in many quarters as 'Psycho'.

On the other hand, City have never beaten Boro in the Premiership or in their last 11 meetings. But we will be brave and back the Sky Blues to lay that bogey to rest.

Betterbet.com offer a decent 5/4 for the home win and that's where we will be putting our cash.

West Ham to temporarily stop the rot

The vultures will hover over Upton Park this Sunday when free-falling West Ham United welcome Blackburn Rovers.

Sir Alex Ferguson, no less, called for an end to the culture of sacking managers at the first sign of trouble but that plea could fall on deaf ears in the east end of London.

Hammers boss Alan Pardew, whose side were defeated 2-1 at lowly Chesterfield in the Carling Cup in midweek, insisted he would not take himself out of the firing line - even if his side crash to their ninth successive defeat.

Pardew has been given a dreaded vote of confidence by his board but that might produce its usual counter-effects in the wake of a Rovers victory.

Some good news on the Upton Park front is that veteran striker Teddy Sheringham could shrug off a knee injury to put his shoulder to the wheel against the Ewood Park men.

Blackburn manager Mark Hughes is without midfielder Robbie Savage who serves a one-match suspension after accumulating five bookings.

But we reckon that loss will not affect the result of this match too much.

We have a gut feeling - no more - that the Hammers will get it right this time in front of their disgruntled fans.

At 11/8 with Betterbet.com, the home side are a decent price to stop the rot. One suspects however, that it may only be temporary.

Collonges to star at Wetherby

The jumpers definitely take centre stage on Saturday with some cracking cards at Wetherby and Ascot.

Bookmakers are already reporting far more interest in the jump cards rather than the end of season flat fare on offer at Newmarket.

The Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby (3.25) has attracted a competitive entry of 10 runners, the biggest field for 13 years and BetterBet.com have made NEPTUNE COLLONGES their 5/2 favourite. Champion trainer Paul Nicholls has already made an excellent start to the new campaign and Neptune Collonges definitely has youth on his side and is a potential superstar in the making that we want to keep on the right side of today.

Meanwhile, news from Down Under and Kieren Fallon will be able to ride Yeats in the Emirates Melbourne Cup on Tuesday week despite picking up a 10-day ban for a riding offence at Moonee Valley.

Yeats is currently 5-1 joint favourite with BetterBet.com for the race that stops the nation.

Honours even in battle of nerves

Newcastle versus Charlton at St James Park is Saturday's second televised match and two more nervy sides, certainly with regards their Premiership form, would be hard to find.

The struggling Londoners beat Bolton in the Carling Cup in midweek but will be looking to find some Premiership respite at St James Park against a United side who have hardly been world beaters themselves this season.

The statistics make depressing reading for fans of both clubs. Iain Dowie's men remain anchored to the foot of the table, with last Saturday's disappointing goalless home draw against fellow strugglers Watford preceding the encouraging win over the Trotters.

Glenn Roeder's erratic side beat Portsmouth in the Carling Cup but it is difficult to read too much into a game that was played in farcically wet conditions.

The fact is, Newcastle haven't won at home in the league since their opening day success over Wigan, and have lost three Premiership matches on the bounce. Can Charlton take advantage?

We think a draw will be the best the capital side can hope for and Betterbet.com's 11/5 encourages us to gamble on honours even.

Sorenstam keeps Dubai advantage

Sorenstam has only dropped one shot in her two rounds so farR2 LEADERBOARD:-11 A Sorenstam (Swe)-6 K Webb (Aus)-5 T Elosgui Mayor (Sp), S Sandolo (It), T Johnson (Eng) World number one Annika Sorenstam stretched her lead to five shots at the halfway stage of the Dubai Ladies Masters thanks to a second-round 68. The Swede birdied five of her opening 15 holes before dropping her first shot of the tournament at the eighth - her 17th hole. Australia's Karrie Webb, ranked third in the world, also shot 68 to move into second place on six under. England's Trish Johnson is in a three-way tie for third on five under. Johnson had the best round of the day - a 67 - with a strong back nine of 32 which included three birdies in a row from the turn. But she is still chasing Sorenstam, who marked the end of her round by going on a camel-riding trip in the desert. "I'm really pleased to be 11 under at halfway, I played really well, especially getting to the turn in four under," she said. "On the back nine, I just couldn't really get anything going. But just one bogey in 36 holes is pretty satisfying." Yorkshire 17-year-old Kiran Matharu followed her opening 68 with a 73 and is still inside the top 10 on three under par.

Forrester a doubt for All Blacks

Number eight Forrester, 25, is part of a new-look England squadEngland forward James Forrester, 25, must see a specialist to determine if he can play any part in next Sunday's Test against New Zealand at Twickenham. The Gloucester number eight, who has two caps, has a knee injury which has already ruled him out of Saturday's Heineken Cup visit of French side Agen. "We expect to know the extent of the injury on Monday," revealed Gloucester head coach Dean Ryan. England's game with the All Blacks on 5 November starts their autumn campaign.

Overseas athletes to get 2012 aid

Overseas Olympic and Paralympic teams will be awarded grants totalling £9m to encourage the use of UK-based training camps ahead of the London 2012 Games.
Teams will be able to apply for up to £26,000 towards the cost of preparing their athletes at UK-designated camps.
"This represents a very special opportunity for us all to reach out and welcome the world's athletes to the UK," said 2012 chairman Lord Coe.
He said it put athletes' welfare "at the heart" of planning for the Games.
The Pre-Games Training Camp Grant Scheme will enable all 203 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) and the 161 National Paralympic Committees (NPCs) to apply for credit.
Grants will only be awarded to teams that use approved UK training camps that feature in the Pre-Games Training Camp Guide to be issued in 2008.
The grants will help athletes from smaller nations who would not otherwise have the financial resources to use pre-Games training camps
Debbie Jevans, London 2012 Organising Committee
"We have always been serious when we said that we wanted the London 2012 Games to be the sporting experience of a lifetime for all competing athletes," said Lord Coe.
"Our grant plan is one example, but an important one, of how we plan to honour that pledge and place the welfare of athletes at the very heart of planning for the Games.
"That is our commitment to the world's athletes and we won't let them or their countries down."
It is hoped that in offering incentives to train in the UK rather than abroad, Games-related benefits for London and the UK will be maximised.
"This represents a special opportunity for us all to reach out and welcome the world's athletes to the UK, to showcase our towns, cities, regions and nations and form friendships that will last a lifetime and bring us all closer together through sport, in the true Olympic spirit," Lord Coe added.
Debbie Jevans, director of sport at the London 2012 Organising Committee, said: "The grants will be allocated fairly and equitably and will be given to off-set the cost of essential services such as facility use.
"The grants will help athletes from smaller nations who would not otherwise have the financial resources to use pre-Games training camps."
British Olympic Association chief executive Simon Clegg said: "When you consider that half of the 203 national Olympic committees compete with 10 or less athletes, this generous grant will ensure many of the teams' entire pre-London preparation camp needs will be covered."

Flintoff set to bowl for England Champions Trophy

Ahmedabad: England v West IndiesMatch starts on Saturday at 1000 BST Flintoff last bowled for England in the third Test against Sri LankaCaptain Andrew Flintoff could bowl for England for the first time since June in their final Champions Trophy game against West Indies on Saturday. The Lancashire all-rounder has been playing as a batsman as he builds up match fitness after ankle surgery. But he feels ready to bowl as well and told BBC Sport: "There's a possibility. I'll bowl in the nets and see how I go. "I won't be bowling all 10 overs but somewhere in between. I feel good, the ankle's fine, and I'm confident in it." The Windes' victory over India on Thursday ended England's slim chances of reaching the Champions Trophy semi-finals. They lost their opening two games, against India and Australia, to continue a poor run in limited-overs games which has seen nine defeats in 12 matches. We're a talented group of players - it's just producing the goods on the day Andrew FlintoffFlintoff insists they have what it takes to compete against the best, however, and says they are determined to finish the tournament with a flourish in Ahmedabad. "It's the last game, we can't progress in the tournament, but we've still got a lot to play for," the 28-year-old added. "We're playing for pride - and pride's a strong thing - so we'll go in there trying to beat the West Indies and go home on a high. "We're a talented group of players and can play, it's just producing the goods on the day. "The one thing we need to get is consistency and that comes from winning matches. You spend time in the nets but you have to go out in the middle and play properly." It's important that we get the best team out there - we don't want a hiccup Brian LaraHolders West Indies are through to the last four after stunning world champions Australia and the hosts in their first two matches. Captain Brian Lara has dismissed suggestions that they might rest key players, including himself, for the England game. The left-hander passed a late fitness test before the India game after suffering from back spasms against the Aussies. "It's important that we get the best team out there. We don't want to have a hiccup at this time," he explained. "We did that in the tri-series in Malaysia, where we experimented in the game before the final, and lost momentum. "We've got the batting line-up that we want and, if I'm fitter than I was against India, I'll definitely play."

European Poker Tour - Dublin - Day One 'A'

Hoping the luck of the Irish would be on their side, 195 Players were ready for action this afternoon to begin Day One 'A' of the European Poker Tour Stop at Dublin. The Regency Hotel is the host of the tournament. Refreshingly, the tournament room is huge, which leaves players (and media) plenty of room to circulate. Also refreshing is the fact that there is no smoking allowed in the tournament room. So, unlike a couple EPT stops, you don't leave the tournament room smelling like an ashtray. Tournament officials had implemented a new system, called 'CardRoom Magic', which manages the entire tournament from beginning to end. The system even has a voice that announces the new blind levels, when breaks are, etc. The

system is apparently gaining widespread use throughout Europe, and has the blessing of the British Gaming Control Board. The majority of the big names are scheduled to play tomorrow on Day 1 B, but some of them decided to come down to the poker room early, just to 'have a look'. Ram Vaswani was playing Chinese Poker with a friend in the corner. Greg Raymer was playing some freerolls - just to give poker players the pleasure to be able to say that they had played at the same table as a former WSOP Champion. Raymer also gave some tips to his tablemates. "I wish I had played a sit & go with him. I would have raised him with 2-7 and then showed it to him" says a young man watching from the corner. One thing I found interesting as I walked by the cash games, is it seemed if a player got up, and missed a big blind, he or she didn't have to post to get right back into the game – they call it "player joins the table as a guest". There is no time charge here in Ireland, and it seemed to be the rake was running at about 5%, which, depending on where the player was from, was either met with delight, or dismay. I saw one player at the 2/5 No Limit table with only about €35 left in front of him (the buy in was €500) . I looked at him quizzically, and he said he had just had his Aces cracked the hand before, and was ready to go after he dumped his last few chips. Three hours later, I walked by again, and he had €1,800 in front of him, claming he had never re-bought in. A couple players at the table verified his tale, as he sat with the world's biggest grin on his face – you gotta love No Limit Hold 'em. The hand of the day involved Marc Goodwin. After calling a players all in for 7,200 chips, the player behind Marc re-raised 13,000 more all in. About 2 minutes of deliberation later, Marc decides to call with 6 6. The original all in player flips over 3h 4h. The re-raiser, however shows Q Q, and Goodwin is in trouble. But, there are five more cards to come, and if you follow tournaments, you probably know what's coming. The flop is 7 8 10, and Marc picks up a few outs. The turn is another 7, but the river is a 6, and Marc wins a 47,000 chip pot, making him one of the monster stacks at that time. Goodwin managed to wield that stack like a hammer, and finished the day second in chips with 98,200. Day one 'A' finished with 49 of the original 195 players still standing. The chip leader is Norway's Jonas Helness, with top European players Paul Testud, Roy 'The Boy' Brindley, and Andy Black lurking near the top. Norwegian wunderkind Johnny Lodden finished the day on about 45,000 chips, slightly above average. Chip Counts are below. Day 1 B will start Friday at 2:00pm local time, and the list of big names playing is a mile long. See you tomorrow. Our Vic heads ten in Charlie Hall

Our Vic won the 2005 Paddy Power Gold Cup at CheltenhamOur Vic heads a field of 10 for the Charlie Hall Chase on Saturday as the jumps season moves into full swing.
David Pipe's eight-year-old steps back up in trip for his seasonal debut over three miles, one furlong at Wetherby
Nine horses take on the gelding, including Kingscliff and Take The Stand, who were second and third to Ollie Magern in the race last year.
A high-quality card also includes the John Smith's Hurdle, although Black Jack Ketchum bypasses the race.
On a busy day of action, Ollie Magern runs in the United House Gold Cup Handicap at Ascot.
Our Vic won three of his five starts when campaigned over two miles, five furlongs last term.
But the last time he tried Saturday's trip, he was pulled up in the Betfair Bowl at Aintree in April 2005.
Kingscliff's trainer Robert Alner also saddles Sir Rembrandt, while Jonjo O'Neill has declared Iris's Gift.
The field is completed by Royal Emperor, Neptune Collonges, Jungle Jinks, Jaloux d'Estruval and Irish raider Church Island.
My Way De Solzen has an easier task than expected on his seasonal return after Black Jack Ketchum was not declared to run in the big hurdle race at Wetherby.
Alan King's World Hurdle hero, who was beaten on his final start last season, faces six rivals.
Howard Johnson sent out Inglis Drever to land last year's renewal and he saddles No Refuge this time around.
At Ascot, Ollie Magern will bid to retain his reputation for performing well when fresh.
The eight-year-old, trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies, ran poorly in his subsequent five races after the 2005 Charlie Hall Chase.
He faces 12 rivals in the three-mile contest, including seasoned campaigners such as Royal Auclair, See You Sometime and Ballycassidy plus a clutch of interesting runners further down the weights.

Permanent Wigan deal for Kirkland

Kirkland joined Liverpool from Coventry for £6m in 2001
Wigan have signed goalkeeper Chris Kirkland on a permanent deal from Liverpool until 2009.
Kirkland, 25, initially joined the Latics on a six-month loan deal in the summer and has been ever-present for the Premiership outfit this season.

Wigan boss Paul Jewell said: "It was always our intention to make the deal permanent. It's great news that we've got it all sorted so quickly."

Kirkland joined Liverpool for £6m from Coventry in 2001.

But he fell down the pecking order because of injury and spent last season on loan at West Brom.

606: DEBATE
If he can stay injury free Kirkland has the potential to be the England number one

footy-analysis
606: Have your say
Kirkland, who made his international debut in England's 4-0 win over Greece in August, said of his move: "I'm really pleased that my future is now sorted.

"It's been great since joining Wigan, we have a tremendous set of lads and the gaffer has been different class.

"This is an ambitious club that is going places and I'm delighted that I'll be part of that."

Jewell is delighted with the quality of goalkeepers he now has at the JJB Stadium.

He said: "I'm blessed with three excellent keepers in Kirky, Mike Pollitt and John Filan, who's currently on loan at Doncaster. The competition is fierce and that's how I like it."

Preston to win Friday night derby

Friday night's Lancashire derby between Burnley and Preston is a meeting of two teams flying high towards the top of the Championship.

The home side are well on course for a play-off place if not promotion itself and their biggest problem could he hanging on to their manager Steve Cotterill whose growing reputation will inevitably see him coveted by other clubs.

The former Cheltenham boss was heavily linked with the West Brom job recently and the Burnley board turned down Sheffield Wednesday's request to speak to Cotterill last week.

However, this Friday evening Cotterill's men face a tough test against a side who are even better placed in the table, sitting in second place behind Cardiff.

Preston recorded a fifth straight home win against Hull City in their last league match thanks to a brace from Danny Dichio but they did not have it all their own way against rock-bottom Tigers.

But significantly - we think - Burnley are playing this match at Turf Moor.

It is their away form that has shot them up the table - they have been beaten three times in front of their own fans.

The Deepdale side could take advantage of some nervousness among the home players as the match goes on.

Betterbet.com offers 5/1 on Preston to grab an away win after drawing at the interval - good odds in our book.

Washington an 8-1 chance to rule America

Aidan O'Brien admits George Washington's attempt to conquer America in the 5million Breeders' Cup Classic is a gamble - but one well worth taking.

The Ballydoyle trainer has doubts the four-time Group One-winning son of Danehill will act on the dirt surface.

Going beyond a mile for the first time in his nine-race career is also stepping into unknown territory.

But speaking via a phone-link at an Epsom press conference, O'Brien said: "Obviously, like everybody knows, we've never had a horse with the pace of this horse.

"All the good horses we've had none of them have been able to match the natural pace, and to cruise and quicken like this horse can.

"Everyone says Danehill won't go on the dirt and obviously that's very possible and we won't know that until he runs.

"All we do know is we've never had a horse with this type of class.

"Obviously it's a gamble, but we are hoping maybe he will be able to overcome all of this.

"But he's so quick naturally early and he cruises, so we always thought he'd have a chance of getting a mile and a quarter.

"He's a very rare horse this fellow. Obviously, it is exciting and we don't know what is going to happen.

"He's never been stopping at the end of his races, even though he's never travelled further than a mile.

"We won't know that until he turns into the straight. We just have to hope he jumps and travels and whatever happens after that happens.

"Obviously it is a big disadvantage going out there not having run on the dirt.

"But as we've seen with many of the horses we've ever had, if it is possible to overcome these things, this horse could do it."

BetterBet.com have reacted by making Geroge Washington an 8-1 chance to win the race a week on Saturday.

Our four team Wednesday acca

Carling Cup football takes over this week and there are several intriguing ties which will hopefully give us the chance to make a few bob.

Accumulators are usually for mug punters only but in these circumstances we feel confident enough in picking the winner in four of the Wednesday night matches.

Manchester United are at Crewe Alexandra and although the Reds will no doubt field a weakened side - and they have lost out before in this competition by doing that - we reckon they will brush aside the challenge of the Railwaymen and will happily take the 1/3 offered by Betterbet.com.

Take Spurs at 4/11 to beat MK Dons - the White Hart Lane side are too professional to be caught napping in this tie - and add to that Bolton at 11/8 to see off struggling Charlton at the Valley.

The Londoners are in freefall at the moment while Sam Allardyce's side are in need of oxygen after reaching the dizzy heights of third in the Premiership above Arsenal and behind Man Utd and Chelsea To round off what we hope will be a fruitful night, we reckon Liverpool will be too strong for Reading at Anfield.

The Merseyside club were crucified by critics after their abject display against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday and will be stung into a reply.

Betterbet.com odds of 4/9 for a Liverpool victory, added to the other three winners should make for a profitable enough four-team accumulator.

Rush to star as racing returns at Cheltenham

For many punters - the very word 'Cheltenham' marks the start of the National Hunt season proper and they will relish an attractive looking card on Tuesday - the first Cheltenham meeting of the new jumps season.

Big betting race of the day is the handicap hurdle at 3.20 where 19 runners go to post - meaning BetterBet.com will pay out at a quarter the odds on the first four places.

The race has attracted a strong Irish challenger in Emotional Article who could well start favourite - but we prefer the chances of the superbly consistent RUSHNEEYRIVER who hasn't finished out of the first two in his last seven races and his trainer is also in cracking form with three winners from her last seven runners.

Rushneeyriver, who has taken a rapid rise up the handicap, could still be well treated as he has the habit of not doing a great deal when in front. He looks a sound each-way bet.

At a longer price CHAMPAGNE HARRY may also warrant each way support.

Alonso takes title as Massa wins

Alonso enjoys the spoils of victory on the Interlagos podium
Renault's Fernando Alonso won a second straight drivers' title with second place at the Brazilian Grand Prix as rival Michael Schumacher hit trouble.

Schumacher needed to win with Alonso out of the points to clinch an eighth title in his final race, but his Ferrari suffered a puncture early on.

The German put in a storming recovery drive to finish fourth but could do nothing about Alonso's title march.

Ferrari's Felipe Massa won the race, with Jenson Button's Honda third.

Renault's Giancarlo Fisichella finished sixth, behind McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen, and the result was enough for the team to beat Ferrari by five points and win the constructors' championship for the second year in a row.

The Ferraris were the fastest cars in the race by far and Massa, who started from pole position, was in control throughout to become the first Brazilian to win his home race since the late Ayrton Senna in 1993.

Massa wasted no time in pulling out a huge lead in the Ferrari
"This is amazing. To win here in front of my own people - it is a dream come true," Massa said.

"It is incredible. The car was wonderful and it was the easiest race of my life because of that.

"But I must say thank you to Michael for all his help and he is a great friend and a great driver. I am sorry for him but this is the best day of my life."

Massa romped away into the lead in the first two laps before a heavy crash suffered by Williams' Nico Rosberg brought out the safety car.

When racing resumed, the Brazilian again stormed off into the distance, leaving Raikkonen - his future Ferrari team-mate - trailing.

At this stage, Schumacher appeared to have a good chance of winning his final race before retirement.

Stuck down in 10th place on the grid because of a fuel-pressure problem in qualifying, he made a dynamic start to the race, and was up to sixth by the time the safety car came out.

When racing resumed three laps later, Schumacher began to pile the pressure on Alonso's team-mate Giancarlo Fisichella.

After trailing him for a couple of laps, he made a move on the Italian at the end of lap eight.

The Ferrari took the lead as they powered down the pit straight, and fended off Fisichella's attempt to re-take the position as they dived into the Senna S.

Schumacher drove his final race as he did the rest - on the limit
But halfway through the corner, the rear of the Ferrari slid wide, and heading out on to the back straight Fisichella streaked past as Schumacher slowed dramatically with his left rear tyre coming apart.

He was forced to tour slowly around the rest of the lap before coming into the pits for a new tyre.

He rejoined last, just ahead of Massa, and set to work on making what he could of his final competitive appearance in an F1 car.

Out of sync on fuel stops with the rest because Ferrari fuelled his car at the same time as replacing his punctured tyre, he began to put in the sort of drive that has defined his career - relentless pace, commitment and consistency right on the limit.

He set a series of fastest laps as he scythed through the field once his fuel load came down and others' pit stops brought them back towards him.

As the race balanced out after the final stops, Schumacher was again in sixth place on the tail of Fisichella.

This time, though, he did not find it so easy to pass the Renault.

He harried Fisichella for 10 laps before the pressure finally told. Fisichella misjudged his braking into the first corner with nine laps to go and ran wide.

606: DEBATE
Brilliant last race from Schumi. But I am pleased Alonso is champion

DW
606: Have your say

That allowed Schumacher past to chase Raikkonen.

The Ferrari quickly caught the McLaren, and Schumacher made it past with a very brave move as Raikkonen robustly defended his position at the first corner with three laps to go.

With Button more than six seconds ahead in third place, that was as far as Schumacher would go, but his performance at least ensured he bowed out of F1 in style.

Behind the untouchable Massa at the front, Alonso had made a cautious start to the race, holding position in fourth place behind Raikkonen and Jarno Trulli's Toyota.

But the Spaniard began to come on strong in the run up to the first pit-stop period once the Italian retired early with suspension failure.

Raikkonen made his stop first, at the end of lap 21, but Alonso had another five laps of fuel left in his car, and he rejoined just ahead of the McLaren.

Alonso now had to worry about Button, which made strong progress after starting 14th and passed Raikkonen at the end of the pit straight on lap 29.

Button was close behind Alonso until the second stops, but the Renault again stayed out longer and easily held on to second place to the end of the race.

Raikkonen was never far behind Button, but was forced to end his McLaren career in an understated fourth place, to end McLaren's first winless season since 1996.

Honda's Rubens Barrichello was seventh ahead of the McLaren of Pedro de la Rosa, who did an unconventional one-stop race.

Better take Colchester to boost our winnings

Can we humbly remind you that Manchester United's comfortable win over Liverpool at 10/11 with BetterBet.com was tipped by us and we will take our winnings onto Monday night's Championship clash between Coventry and Colchester.

Both sides are sitting in the middle of the table, unlikely to be bothered by relegation problems or the fight for the Premiership but both are in different stages of their season.

Colchester crushed Sheffield Wednesday 4-0 in their last outing which lifted them into 10th in the Championship, their highest ever position in the Football League.

Goals from Jamie Cureton, Greg Halford, Chris Iwelumo and Karl Duguid saw them coast to victory at Layer Road and you would assume confidence is at an all-time high for this trip to the midlands.

Coventry, on the other hand, lost 1-0 to Wolves in their last league match and manager Micky Adams is more than pleased to see the impending return of long-term injury absentees Stuart Giddings, Mikkel Bischoff and Wayne Andrews - but all three will struggle to make it for this game.

We are impressed by the Essex side enough to tip them for an away win and will wager a few quid of our United winnings with BetterBet.com at 5/4.

Man U too strong for their Liverpool visitors

Manchester United welcome old rivals Liverpool to Old Trafford in Sunday's joust of the giants.

However, this contest looks rather one-side from where we are sitting. The Koppites grabbed an encouraging Champions League win in Bordeaux in midweek but will face up to stronger opponents in the Premiership leaders.

United are off to a flier this season - despite having to deal with a number of injuries and suspensions - and there's already a gap of eight points between this pair just eight games into the league campaign.

Liverpool have already lost three times away from home - at Bolton, Chelsea and Everton - and there is a fragility and inconsistency about them on their travels.

Old Trafford stars Ryan Giggs, Rio Ferdinand, Gary Neville and Gabriel Heinze could all be back for the weekend and that makes us think that BetterBet.com's 10/11 is worth taking.

Fulham for 4/1 win

Saturday's tea-time Premiership sees on-form Aston Villa welcome Fulham to the midlands.

Martin O'Neill is being heralded as the messiah (again) since arriving at Villa Park in the summer although there was some consternation at home last weekend before they eventually got their 1-1 draw with Tottenham.

But significantly, that point meant that, almost incredibly, Villa remain the only team in the league yet to lose a game.

And it is at Villa Park where they have set about building their new-found reputation this season although it has to be said that all their victims have been less than top drawer opponents.

Wins over Reading, Newcastle and Charlton preceded the stumble against the men from White Hart Lane and once again the fixture list has been kind to O'Neill.

Fulham have struggled away from Craven Cottage and their win at Newcastle this season was just their second victory in their last 22 Premiership games away from home.

So why then will we take the Londoners to win this game? Call it a gambler's instinct but we feel Villa must be due for a set-back and their draw against Tottenham indicated that they are not the finished article by a long chalk.

BetterBet's 4/1 for Fulham to win the match tempts us to go for the long shot as we are inclined to do occasionally throughout the season. Join us if you feel lucky.

Hartlepool for Friday night win

The Coca-Cola League Two clash on Friday night between Chester and Hartlepool kick-off this weekend of football.

Both these mid-table clubs have struggled so far this season with the home side having won four in 14 league games while the visitors have fared slightly better with five wins from the same amount of games.

Chester drew 0-0 with Rochdale in their last league outing while the ‘Pool drew 1-1 with Stockport at home which makes it difficult to split these two sides.

betterbet will give you 5/4 for Chester to pick up their third home win of the season but we think the visitors are the more likely at 7/4 - and that's what we recommend.

Danny Wilson's men cruised to a 3-1 win over League One side Rotherham in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy - the performance of the round - which suggests they have found a bit of form just in time for the visit to Chester.

Bet with positive expectancy

Is there anyway you can beat a casino game which is one of pure chance? Systems, such as the Martingale System are a sure road to ruin.

Particularly in Las Vegas there are dollar progressive jackpot machines. Basically every time a player puts $1 in the machine, the jackpot goes up by 1¢. If the jackpot is not won for a long time, then eventually the machine moves into positive expectancy. It is time for the professionals to move in, hog the machine and play on it until hitting the jackpot. You may have to invest $50,000 before the $70,000 jackpot pays off. But hell, it beats working for a living.

There is even a five card draw poker table spread in the Grosvenor Casinos throughout Britain where eventually, if the jackpot is not won, wagering moves into positive expectancy. This is around about where the jackpot reaches £250,000. The problem is that it is still 650,000/1 against making a Royal Flush. You could play for the rest of your life and never win. But it is a bet with a positive expectancy.

Barcelona to take advantage of Chelsea's goalkeeper woes

When you consider your options for the Champions League action on Wednesday remind yourself of our latest advice on the Fulham versus Charlton game on Monday.

We said: "Bet Direct offers 7/2 for the game being drawn at half-time and Fulham to be the victors at the final whistle. That's where we will be directing our stake money."

Hopefully you all took advantage and are ready for our next steer.

A goalkeeping crisis at Chelsea leads us to lean towards Barcelona in their Champions League clash at Stamford Bridge.

Petr Cech is currently recovering from an operation on the serious head injury he suffered in the early stages of Saturday's Barclays Premiership victory at Reading.

In a bizarre game, Carlo Cudicini was also stretchered off and is recovering well from the bout of concussion he suffered in the closing stages of the match.

Hilario, the 31-year-old Portuguese keeper, is set to make his debut but whoever ends up in the Chelsea goal, there must be an element of nervousness around and we think Ronaldinho and co can take advantage.

We will take Bet Direct's 13/8 for a Barca win and double it up with Bordeaux, also at 13/8, to take care of Liverpool in France.

Koppite talisman Stevie Gerrard has been ruled out with a hamstring problem and we feel that will tip the balance in favour of the home side.

Fulham to clinch it late on

After a controversial weekend of goalkeeping injuries followed a week of goalkeeping errors, we might hope for a less controversial Monday night in the London derby between Fulham and Charlton at Craven Cottage.

Iain Dowie's men will travel across the Thames with trepidation given their start to the season. Not good at all.

Six defeats in seven games has left the Addicks looking up at the rest of the Premiership and probably kept Simon Jordan, his boss at Palace before they parted in acrimony, in a perpetual state of mirth.

Fulham, neat and tidy as usual without having you on the edge of your seat, have only lost to Manchester United and Chelsea in their opening seven games and there is no shame in that.

So this game offers the chance for the Cottagers to consolidate their mid-table position - probably as high as they are likely to end up at the end of the season.

And we think Fulham will eventually squeeze through in the end but there won't be much in it.

Bet Direct offers 7/2 for the game being drawn at half-time and Fulham to be the victors at the final whistle. That's where we will be directing our stake money.

Sunday double

We tipped Chelsea to be winning at half-time and full-time on their trip to Reading (and what game that turned out to be) but we have to admit following that winning advice up in Sunday afternoon's Premiership encounter between Bolton and Newcastle will prove more difficult.
Sam Allardyce's side beat Liverpool in their last outing but a visit to St James Park does not inspire massive confidence in us.

United are notoriously difficult to predict and could turn on the style at any given time - usually when you least expect it.

But Bolton's rock-solid defence has conceded just three goals all season - not bad by anyone's standards - so we think that they are good enough to hold out against the Magpies.

We will take Bet Direct's 11/5 for the draw but we will use that as part of a double and in our other match, the Edinburgh derby, we are much more confident.

The Easter Road side go into the game still trying to get over the news that manager Tony Mowbray has left to join West Brom.

Mowbray's assistant Mark Venus will take the team for the last time before he also departs for the Hawthorns and we reckon the disappointment surrounding the loss of the popular management duo will affect the home players.

The Gorgie side have shown in the past few seasons that they can play through all sorts of upsets and should be too focussed and strong for the Leith side who have worries over Moroccan duo Abdessalam Benjelloun and Merouane Zemmama.

So given the disarray at Easter Road, we tip Hearts at 5/4 with Bet Direct to triumph in the first capital meeting of the season.

Chelsea to destroy Reading

On the face of it, Saturday's live tea-time game sees a real David and Goliath contest when champions Chelsea visit Reading.

The Royals gave Middlesbrough a two-goal start on the opening day of the season before coming from behind to win and have already held Manchester United to a 1-1 draw at the Madejski Stadium.

But despite the fact that Reading have captured just three points less than Chelsea from their opening seven games the superstars of the Kings Road are a different proposition altogether.

The Stamford Bridge side have the Champions League to look forward to next week and Jose Mourinho make tinker with his line-up but even then they should still be too strong.

Bet Direct will give you even money for Chelsea to be winning at half-time and full-time and we will be lumping on.

And for a nice little side bet, why not try Andriy Shevchenko at 9/2 to open the scoring for the visitors.

The Ukrainian striker looked back to his best against Scotland during the week and could take that form into the domestic scene.

Pietersen favourite to hit Sunday sixes

Kevin Pietersen is the 6/4 favourite to score the most sixes in England's opening ICC match against India on Sunday.

The South African born powerhouse has been out form in recent times and perished to the dreaded sweep shot in the team's warm up game against a Rajasthan Cricket Association XI on Thursday.

But his big-hitting game has seen him edge out Andrew Flintoff in the betting, with the skipper priced up at 13/8.

Middlesex all-rounder Jamie Dalrymple, who hit four maximums in an unbeaten knock of 79 in Jaipur, is a 2/1 shot.

Pietersen is 9/1 to score a century against the hosts, with Andrew Strauss and potential fellow opener Flintoff both 12/1.

Rahul Dravid's side are 5/2 to have one of their batsman hit a ton, with the visitors priced at 4/1.

The captain is 12/1 alongside Virender Sehwag, with Sachin Tendulkar 7/1 following his three figure hit for India Blue against the India Green in the Challenger Trophy.

Despite only taking one wicket in the warm up game, Steve Harmison is 7/2 favourite to be England's leading wicket-taker tomorrow.

Jimmy Anderson, Jon Lewis and Sajid Mahmood, who took three for 22, are all 4/1.

With slow bowlers Jamie Dalrymple and Michael Yardy likely to get the nod, Ladbrokes are 5/2 that spin takes more wickets than seam.

Southend and Coventry to fight out draw

Most of Britain's football fans are in need of cheering up after the midweek 2008 Euro qualifiers.

England and Scotland suffered depressing defeats which badly affected the punters although the two Irish sides and Wales did well.

Hopefully Friday night will give us all a chance to recoup our losses with a nice little winner to start off the weekend.

Friday night's action sees Championship football between Southend and Coventry and it's fair to say this is not a contest between two teams playing at the top of their form.

The Shrimpers lost 3-0 to Derby in their last outing and currently sit third bottom of the table.

Coventry lost their last game at home to Plymouth although in mitigation that was their first defeat in front of their own fans this season.

City boss Mickey Adams can see light at the end of the tunnel for three of his players Stuart Giddings, Mikkel Bischoff and Wayne Andrews, whose injuries have surely affected the Sky Blues' start to the season.

But we think they will be happy enough to leave Southend with a point and will take Bet Direct's odds of 11/5 for both sides to fight out a draw.

Draw best hope for England

Steve McClaren's honeymoon period ended abruptly on Saturday after England were held to a 0-0 draw with Macedonia, a scoreline that was available at 20/1 with some bookmakers.

It is unthinkable that England will not eventually qualify for the Euro 2008 championships but it could become a bumpy ride for the former Middlesbrough boss if they lose to Croatia in a fixture they have every right to face with some trepidation after the weekend‘s performance at Old Trafford.

Despite having several chances to take all three points, England simply looked devoid of ideas throughout and deserved only a point from the match.

There should be no doubt that Croatia, unbeaten at home in competitive matches for 16 years, will pose even more problems in front of their hostile supporters.

McClaren is believed to contemplating operating a 3-5-2 system but he must be worrying about his options in attack with Wayne Rooney still looking out of sorts.

Bet Direct have Croatia at 2/1 with England at 11/8 and the draw at 9/5 and it is the draw that interests us.

We don't think England can end Croatia's fine run of form at home but they should have enough to escape with a point.

Ledley King blow for England

Ledley King has pulled out of the England squad for the Euro 2008 qualifier in Croatia.

The Tottenham defender did not join Steve McClaren and his players on the flight to Zagreb as he still has concerns about his knee, on which he had an operation in the summer.

The problem ruled him out of training on Monday and, after a conversation with boss McClaren and England's medical staff, it was agreed he should not travel.

The Football Association's director of communications Adrian Bevington said: "While Ledley King didn't suffer any reaction overnight to his knee, further to conversations involving Ledley, Steve McClaren and England's medical staff, immediately before flying this morning, it has become clear that Ledley is not entirely comfortable.

England are favourites at around 6-4 to win the match.

Trabolgan could miss entire season

Connections of Trabolgan have revealed it is "very possible" the star chaser will miss the entire jumps season.

Nicky Henderson's eight-year-old suffered a tendon injury when clinically dismantling his rivals to win the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup.

The Trevor Hemmings-owned gelding has not been seen on a racecourse since that triumph at Newbury last November.

Although hopes were this year high of Trabolgan's return to training, a latest scan confirmed the setback is taking longer than expected to heal.

"Unfortunately the healing process has been a slow one," said Hemmings' racing manager Michael Meagher, who is currently in the daily care of the horse.

Alonso now a 1-25 shot

Schumacher's Ferrari suffering engine failure to win the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka and put him within touching distance of retaining his world title.

It is the first time the German has suffered such a problem in five years and it couldn't have happened at a more crucial time.

The race had looked Schumacher's for the taking but disaster stuck on lap 37 when, shortly after leaving the pits, smoke began billowing from his Ferrari, putting him out of the race.

The victory for Alonso means he now only needs to finish in the top eight at the Brazilian Grand Prix to take back-to-back titles.

The odds have now moved dramatically back in Alonso's favour. Shumacher, who was favourite before the Japan race is now out to 9-1 with skybet with Alonso 1-25.

Bernardini warms up for Breeders' Cup in style

Bernardini romped to an easy success in the Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont as Dylan Thomas trailed home a disappointing last of the four runners.

Aidan O'Brien was keen to see how his Irish Derby and Champion Stakes hero fared on the dirt surface ahead of a planned crack at the Breeders' Cup Classic.

However, the colt was slowly away under John Velazquez in the mile-and-a-quarter event and the jockey was already at work only a furlong into the race.

Velazquez eased down when it became apparent that Dylan Thomas had lost any chance of taking a hand in the contest, eventually coming home a distance behind the facile winner.

Five bet Saturday acca

We have to work even harder for our value this Saturday in the Euro 2008 qualifiers which dominate the football calendar.

There is no surprise that England are as short as 1/20 in some places to beat Macedonia at Old Trafford. Not encouraging at all.

First goal scorer is what interests us in this fixture and what better time and place for Wayne Rooney to shrug off all his latest disappointments with fitness and form to grab the opener.

We will take Bet Direct's 10/3 for the controversial Scouser to strike first but even those odds are not enough on their own so we will use it only as the first part of a 'Home Nations' accumulator.

The Republic of Ireland were unfortunate to lose their opening qualifier in Germany and even though the knives are out in some areas for boss Steve Staunton, the Irish can make amends against Cyprus who were thrashed 6-1 by Slovakia.

Bet Direct offer 4/11 for the away win and let that roll onto the Wales v Slovakia match at the Millennium Stadium.

The fact that Craig Bellamy has been named Wales captain tells you all you need to know about the injury problems which have beset John Toshack as they look for their first point of their qualifying campaign.

No Welsh joy on this occasion I'm afraid so Take Bet Direct's generous 2/1 for the away win and turn your attention to Northern Ireland's encounter with Denmark.

Lawrie Sanchez's side go into the match on the back of a coupon-busting 3-2 win against Spain but we can't see lightening strike twice.

Denmark, solid if unspectacular, are 2/9 with Bet Direct. For the last leg of this five-bet accumulator take France at 8/13 to overcome Scotland at Hampden Park.

Draw for the under 21's

Friday night's football can be seen as the tasty starter before the international main course on Saturday.

England's under-21 side take on their German counterparts in the first match of a two-legged play-off and the edge that always involves encounters between these two traditional enemies will make this 90 minutes worth seeing.

With a place in next summer's UEFA European Under-21s Championship Finals at stake, Peter Taylor's men know they will probably have to leave the Ricoh Arena with a lead to take to Leverkusen for the return game on Tuesday.

The home leg in Coventry is already a sell-out, with 32,000 expected but we reckon the Germans can play through the passion of the England fans and get the draw that will out them in the driving seat for the second-leg.

Bet Direct's 2/1 for the draw is too tempting for us to ignore - so we won't!

GB ski chief unhappy at fund cut

Noel Baxter is having his funding cut before he reaches his primeBritish ski chief Jason Cockburn has accused UK Sport of being short-sighted after the alpine skiing funding budget for the next four years was slashed.
The budget up until the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver has been reduced from £1.72m to £922,000.
Cockburn, Snowsport GB's chief executive, told BBC Sport: "We are disappointed by the decision.
"It will have an adverse effect on our up-and-coming athletes and I believe it is short-sighted."
Cockburn said it will be youngsters who are targeting the 2014 and 2018 Games who will see their programmes cut.
We are having to concentrate on the athletes who are performing at the top level now instead of the potential stars of the future
Jason Cockburn
And the men's technical programme - which features slalom skiers Alain and Noel Baxter - will also suffer too.
Cockburn said: "UK Sport are increasing funding for the 2012 summer Games because they are being held in London.
"Just two years later there will be more focus on British athletes at the Winter Olympics but that is when the impact from the reduced funding will be very evident, and that is a shame.
"We are having to concentrate on the athletes who are performing at the top level now instead of the potential stars of the future."
As well as cutting the overall budget, the Baxter brothers will no longer receive Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS) individual sponsorship cash because their World Cup and Olympic results were not good enough.
Only downhill skiers Finlay Mickel and Chemmy Alcott and snowboarder Zoe Gillings will receive this.
UK Sport had stipulated it wanted top-eight results at the 2006 Winter Olympics to guarantee extra funding but Britain's best skiing result was Alcott's 11th in the women's downhill.
Cockburn added: "We were aware of the targets but it just did not happen at the Olympics.
"Noel has had credible results at two Winter Olympics now and he is only 24 yet his funding is being cut.
"If you look at the top 10 male downhill skiers in the world, their average age is 32, so we need to keep funding our athletes.
"This means we will have to try and get more commercial income to keep British skiing performing at the highest level." UK Sport announced an overall 20% increase for winter sports with bob skeleton and curling, which have been Britain's most successful events at the last two Olympics, receiving the bulk of the cash.
