Mickelson spurns Hawaii showpiece

Mickelson endured a tough time at last weekend's Ryder Cup
World number two and Masters champion Phil Mickelson has pulled out of the Grand Slam of Golf in November.
The Hawaii event is designed to bring together the year's four major winners.

But the withdrawal of Mickelson and the fact that Tiger Woods won both the Open and the USPGA means two replacements have been called up.

Based on their results in the majors, American Jim Furyk and Canadian Mike Weir will join Woods and US Open winner Geoff Ogilvy in the four-man field.

Mickelson, who scored only half a point in the United States' Ryder Cup defeat last weekend, is also not playing this week's World Championship at The Grove.

Fellow left-hander Weir, the 2003 Masters winner, was delighted by his call up.

"I'm thrilled about the chance to return to Hawaii and the PGA Grand Slam of Golf," he said.

"It's a chance to compete against the very best players in the world, and I would love to improve on my second place finish last time around."

The 36-hole strokeplay event will take place at the Poipu Bay Golf Course on Kauai island from 21-22 November.

Woods won the title for a record sixth time in 2005, romping to a seven-shot victory over Mickelson after closing with an eight-under-par 64.

Europe take a 5-3 lead into Saturday's Ryder Cup

Europe take a 5-3 lead into Saturday's Ryder Cup fourballs after winning both Friday sessions 2.5-1.5 against USA.

The glamour grouping features Darren Clarke and Lee Westwood against world number one Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk.

And Spanish duo Sergio Garcia and Jose Maria Olazabal are reunited to face Phil Mickelson and Chris DiMarco.

Paul Casey and Robert Karlsson start off against Stewart Cink and JJ Henry, while Padraig Harrington and Henrik Stenson make up Europe's final pair.

Dream tie sees Europe shorten

For the second match running the Ryder Cup will kick off on Friday with the clash everybody wanted to see.

At 8am BST on the first tee of the K Club west of Dublin the first-ever staging of the contest in Ireland will start with Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk against Colin Montgomerie and local hero Padraig Harrington.

Two years ago in Detroit only one of the names was different - Furyk stands in now for Phil Mickelson - and Montgomerie and Padraig Harrington struck a huge blow for Europe when they beat the top two players in the world.

Two days later the Americans suffered their heaviest-ever defeat by 18-9. They have been itching for revenge ever since.

After the first round draw bookies reacted by shortening Europe to around 4-6.

Montgomerie to face Casey in semi

Montgomerie lost four of the first six holes
Colin Montgomerie edged to a dramatic final-hole win over defending champion Michael Campbell to reach the World Match Play Championship semi-finals.
The Scot now meets England's Paul Casey, who beat Canadian left-hander Mike Weir 5&3 at Wentworth.

The other semi-final will be between Shaun Micheel and Robert Karlsson.

American Micheel, who beat Tiger Woods in the opening round, won 4&2 against Luke Donald while Swede Karlsson saw off Angel Cabrera 4&3.

Europe edge Ryder Cup betting after Woods exit

Tiger Woods' exit from the HSBC World Match Play Championship at Wentworth will have disappointed those who bought tickets for this weekend.

Losing golf's undisputed number-one talent on day one is not what the sponsors really wanted either, of course.

But it should have brought a big smile to the face of European Ryder Cup captain Ian Woosnam.

Even though it was another American, Shaun Micheel, who claimed the biggest scalp going yesterday, every member of Woosnam's side facing Woods in Dublin next week ought to feel more confident now.

Most firms now have Europe marginal favourites to secure the Ryder Cup at a shade under evens.

Flak will unite Europe - Woosnam

Woosnam has been backed by some of his players
Ian Woosnam believes Thomas Bjorn's criticism of his captaincy will make Europe's Ryder Cup team stronger.
Bjorn labelled Woosnam "barmy" after he was overlooked for one of the two wildcards, which instead went to Darren Clarke and Lee Westwood.

"It will make Lee and Darren more determined," said Woosnam. "Once we get to the Ryder Cup it will be put to bed.

"Thomas has apologised and the next thing we've got to do is get back to Ireland and win the trophy."

Despite Bjorn's apology, his remarks led to questions being raised about Woosnam's perceived lack of communication with his players and his handling of the media.

And Woosnam accepts he did not come across well in his news conference on Sunday when he announced his two picks.

"I knew when I was standing there I was very nervous and I might not have come over very well," said the Welshman.

"Deep down I was upset because I had to leave someone out and I knew it was going to hurt Thomas and I knew I was going to get some criticism.

"He has his right to say what he did about why he missed it. But it's a pity he had to do it like that. I don't think I have to justify my position to anybody.

"There's 10 spots that are automatic and they were filled and I have to make the next two choices.

"It was a difficult decision but there were a lot of people in the frame. And I went with Darren Clarke and Lee Westwood."
