Spectait a Bank Holiday banker

SPECTAIT (Sandown 4.00) will be many peoples idea of a Bank Holiday banker. He absolutely romped home when well backed at Kempton Park last week despite missing the start. The original intention was for him to run in the Victoria Cup at Ascot on Saturday – but he missed the cut by just one place. Sir Mark Prescott could well build up a sequence very quickly with this four-year-old while he remains one step in front of the handicapper and it is no surprise to see him entered up for plenty of races over the next week or so.

Elsewhere, the Group 2 Henry II Stakes at Sandown can fall to the Sir Michael Stoute trained COVER UP. The Stoute stable is in sensational form with a near 1 in 2 strike rate over the last fortnight.

Confidential tip for Sunday

Testing ground conditions at The Curragh were too blame for the defeat of the hot favourite George Washington in Saturday’s 2,000 Guineas and on Sunday all eyes will turn to the fillies in the 1,000 Guineas where another mudlark is likely to star.

CONFIDENTIAL LADY is a worthy favourite – not only because her second to Speciosa in the English 1000 Guineas makes her the form book choice – but she also will categorically not fail because of the ground. The going at Newmarket was soft for the Guineas and she has also won in France on ‘very soft’ ground – pretty much equivalent to heavy in any other country.

Expect Confidential Lady to give her trainer Sir Mark Prescott a first classic success.

Absurd Derby price on Septimus

Yet again a top class meeting at York was ruined by the underfoot conditions. The course has such a high water table that the going can change dramatically with any significant rainfall.

The big Derby trial – the Dante Stakes – saw Septimus gallop to a seemingly impressive eight length success on soft ground.

However, we can’t help thinking that bookmakers have over-reacted a little with their odds for a follow-up success in the Epsom Derby.

He is now as short as 4/1 – but the despite the Dante having an excellent record as a Derby trial in recent years – this looks a crazy bet and we will take him on at Epsom.

The ground is unlikely to be soft at Epsom and it looked a sub-standard Dante Stakes this year.

Recent Goodwood winner CHAMPIONSHIP POINT is suggested as an early each way bet at 16/1.
