Dirham to win historic Carlisle Bell again

One of the most historic races of the season takes place at Carlisle on Saturday. It's the oldest handicap run in Britain - dating back to the 16th century !!

A healthy field of 17 go to post for this year's renewal worth £30,000 and finding the winner looks difficult.

The stats show that in recent years a horse that has just come into form stands a great chance in this race and with that in mind we'll take a chance with TOP DIRHAM to repeat his success of 2003 in this race. He ran well last time out at York when taking fourth in a decent looking race.

Royal Ascot - day two

The Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot on Wednesday has gone to an unbeaten filly in each of the last five runnings so that helps us narrow the field somewhat.

Three fillies are unbeaten in this year’s race – and at the likely odds we can back all three and show a profit whichever one wins.

PRINCESS IRIS and SUNLEY GIFT would be the preferred winners as they are both likely to go off at least 14/1. Sunley Gift upset her better fancied stable companions when winning well at Newbury and has a live chance. Princess Iris made all to win at Nottingham on her debut and has a lot of potential.

But the unbeaten filly with the best chance is ROXAN from the all-conquering Kevin Ryan yard who won a listed race at Beverley on her racecourse debut – a race that looked decent at the time so that was a superb effort.

Fingers crossed for one of the three.

Royal Ascot - day one

What a day for sports betting – if England v Sweden wasn’t enough – the five-day Royal Ascot meeting gets underway on Tuesday.

Racing has definitely come home – the meeting was transferred to York last year as the course was being redeveloped and although they have had one trial meeting the jury remains out on how well the new stand will cope with the masses at Royal Ascot – and more importantly for punters – whether the re-positioned track will show any biases – particularly in the races where the runners split into two groups.

The early few races will be crucial in terms of keeping an eye on the draw. Two races where you can forget the draw are the 4.25 (only 9 runners) and the 4.55 (2m 4f). In the Queen Anne Stakes at 4.25 PROCLAMATION can win this for Godolphin who have saddled four winners from their last six runners and are very much back at the races.

The marathon Ascot Stakes at 4.55 can fall to a feather weight – SHAMAYOUN at the foot of the handicap looks well in and has the excellent Nicky Mackay onboard.

Godolphin back ?

The Godolphin stable breathed a huge sigh of relief on Wednesday when their runner LIBRETTIST ran out a comfortable winner of the big race at Nottingham under stable jockey Frankie Dettori.

A Nottingham winner wouldn’t usually give Sheikh Mohammed’s all-conquering yard too much to get excited about but this was their first runner since shutting down the stable 10 days ago after an unusually lacklustre run. An even longer absentee was Librettist who had been off the course for nearly 600 days.

Although not too much can be read into one race – this could well be an important turning point for the boys in blue and the timing couldn’t be better coming two weeks before the start of Royal Ascot where their likely runners include Electrocutionist.

Fallon again the Epsom man to follow

Saturday is Derby Day at Epsom and jockey Kieren Fallon has a fine chance of following up his Oaks success onboard HORATIO NELSON. Fallon was thought more likely to opt for stable companion Septimus but switched this week and the odds tumbled accordingly. Whilst Septimus was impressive when winning the Dante Stakes at York – the ground was on the soft side and it didn’t look a vintage renewal so we think Fallon has made the right decision again.

The recommendation is to have a win bet on Horatio Nelson to make amends for a rather disappointing run in the 2,000 Guineas but also support CHAMPIONSHIP POINT each-way. Mick Channon’s runner impressed when winning at Goodwood and is a lively long shot at around 14/1.

Visindar from France is a worthy favourite but may struggle with the undulations and carnival atmosphere of Derby Day.

Speciosa to taste classic success again

Bargain buy SPECIOSA can continue her fairytale career by winning the second fillies classic of the season – the Oaks at Epsom on Friday.

Trained by Pam Sly with great success – it’s fair to say that if she was with one of the more well known trainers her price would be substantially shorter – so we are looking at some value.

She fairly ran away with the 1,000 Guineas and there’s no reason to think why her stamina won’t hold out over the longer Oaks trip.

In a competitive renewal of the Oaks GUILIA appeals as each-way value – she was just pipped by the well-regarded Scottish Stage last time out.

Trainer Aidan O’Brien is a little in and out of form at the moment which leads us away from favourite Alexandrova.
