Sixties at 16's a good bet

Ladbrokes St Leger hero Sixties Icon will fly the flag for Britain when he lines up in Sunday's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp.

The Galileo colt is the only horse from these shores to make the trip to France for the middle-distance showpiece over a mile and a half, where victory would put paid to the notion the Leger can no longer produce a horse of real quality.

Jeremy Noseda's charge was an impressive winner of the one-mile-six-furlong Classic to make it three wins from six career outings.

Sixties Icon will be stepping back in trip, but owner Paul Roy, who supplemented his charge at a cost of £60,000, thinks he has come on again for his York victory.

He said: "He's improved again since the Leger, but he will have to as he's in against the three best horses in the world.

Sixties Icon is a best price 16-1 and looks a sound each way bet.

McCoy wins on injury comeback

Tony McCoy suffered a fall at the 2006 Galway Festival
Champion jump jockey Tony McCoy made a winning return from injury with two victories at Hereford on Thursday.
McCoy had been out for eight weeks after breaking his right wrist at the Galway Festival on 2 August.

But the 32-year-old Northern Irishman got straight back to business, winning a novices' hurdle on 8-11 favourite Absolutelythebest by a huge 17 lengths.

He then went on to win the day's final race, the National Hunt flat race, on Bouncy Castle at 7-2.

McCoy said afterwards: "The wrist is OK. My physio told me the only thing that's going to totally help it is to get back riding.

"The nerves through my hand and my elbow are probably as sore as anything, but I don't notice it riding. I was worried coming back riding that if I needed to give a horse three smacks would I be able to? But it felt OK there."

McCoy now has 51 winners for the season and he is odds-on to win his 12th title in a row.

While he was out of action, his lead had been whittled away with Tom O'Brien and Richard Johnson both challenging.

High-quality field tackles QEII

Mick Kinane will replace Kieren Fallon on George Washington
George Washington heads a top-class field of nine in Saturday's Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot.
Aidan O'Brien's 2,000 Guineas winner will renew rivalry with Araafa, who beat him in the Irish equivalent.

The line-up for the £250,000 contest also includes John Gosden's Coronation Stakes-winning filly Nannina.

The in-form Godolphin team rely on Proclamation and Librettist, who is seeking his third straight Group One win in the mile-long race.

Frankie Dettori will partner Librettist on the 10th anniversary of the jockey's famous 'Magnificent Seven' where he rode every winner on the card at the Berkshire course.

The oldest horse in the field is Ed Dunlop's Court Masterpiece, who won the Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood last time out.

O'Brien also runs River Tiber and Ivan Denisovich and the field is completed by the Barry Hills-trained Killybegs, who finished in front of George Washington when the pair met at Goodwood late last month.

Aussie Rules, Caradak, Satchem and Rajeem were the only withdrawals at Thursday's 48-hour declaration stage.

In the other Group One race on the card, Marco Botti's unbeaten Sesmen will face seven rivals in the Meon Valley Stud Fillies' Mile.

After stretching her 100% record to three successes in the Prestige Stakes at Goodwood, the filly was supplemented for this Group One contest at a cost of £20,000 at Monday's confirmation stage.

Nannina keeps Coronation Stakes

Nannina claimed a two-length win in the Royal Ascot race
Nannina has been confirmed as the winner of this year's Coronation Stakes after a second urine sample showed no trace of a banned substance.
The Horseracing Regulatory Authority ordered a test on her B sample after her original speciman was positive following her Royal Ascot win in June.

However, a negative result from that means the John Gosden-trained filly will now keep the Group One race.

The £152,000 first prize has now been released to the winner's connections.

Paul Struthers, public relations manager for the HRA said: "The HRA's Counter Analysis Advisory Committee will now try to establish why there is a discrepancy in the results of the A and B samples.

"It is standard HRA policy not to discuss individual samples until after a positive B test.

"However, we have done so in this case as the positive A sample, whilst never confirmed by the HRA, had managed to get into the public domain."

Wyatt a Silver Cup machine

Some excellent racing on Friday from Ayr and Newbury in particular and the big betting race of the day is the 27 runner Ayr Silver Cup.

The race was won last year by Machinist - trained by Dandy Nicholls. However, one thing is for certain he won't be winning the race this year or indeed tomorrow's Gold Cup as he missed the deadline for entries due to an administration error at the stables.

The general consensus is that horses drawn low will be at an advantage and the fact that trainer Richard Fahey was so disappointed that WYATT EARP missed the cut for the Gold Cup by four - suggests the horse will run a massive race in this easier contest.

He comes to the race on a hat-trick, will handle the cut in the ground and is drawn out of stall three.

Icon a Frankie Classic ?

Frankie Dettori believes he has a live chance of winning the Ladbrokes St Leger for a fourth time aboard hot favourite Sixties Icon at York on Saturday.

Dettori, successful in the world's oldest Classic with Classic Cliche (1995), Shantou (1996) and the Aidan O'Brien-trained Scorpion last year, takes the ride on Jeremy Noseda's classy colt after the pair teamed up to good effect in the Gordon Stakes last month.

Sixties Icon defeated Leger rival Jadalee by a comfortable length and three-quarters at Glorious Goodwood, which propelled him to the head of the market for the one-mile-six-furlong test.

Dettori now hopes his preference for the son of Galileo rather than Red Rocks will not come back to haunt him.

"He has done everything really well," he said.

"I had a hard decision to make with Sixties Icon and Red Rocks - I hope that I am right on Saturday."

Asked what swayed his choice, the popular Italian added: "I think Sixties Icon is the better stayer, but we will find out on Saturday.

Sixties Icon heads Leger hopefuls

Sixties Icon had a superb win under Dettori last time out
Hot favourite Sixties Icon heads 12 horses declared for the St Leger at York on Saturday.
Jeremy Noseda's colt, who will be ridden by Frankie Dettori, staked his claim for glory by winning the BGC Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.

The runner-up that day, Marcus Tregoning's Jadalee, is among his rivals after winning the March Stakes, back at Goodwood.

Other hopefuls include Red Rocks, trained by Brian Meehan.

Red Rocks was a narrow loser to Youmzain in the Great Voltigeur Stakes at York last month.

His conqueror does not run in the Leger although trainer Mick Channon will be represented by Championship Point.

Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien has left in four horses - Fire And Rain, Mountain, Puerto Rico and Tusculum - as he seeks a fourth victory in the race.

The world's oldest Classic, which is run over 1m 6f, has been moved from its traditional Doncaster home while that course is redeveloped.

Mont Etoile, trained by William Haggas, bids to become the first filly to win the race since User Friendly in 1992.

And Ask is asked to try to give Sir Michael Stoute his first Leger triumph, the only British Classic to elude the Newmarket trainer.

Galient, trained by Michael Jarvis, and The Last Drop from Barry Hills's stable, complete the field.
