type='text'>Maroons target Origin series win

Greg Inglis destroyed the Blues in game two
Queensland will have to overcome a poor record at Sydney's Olympic Stadium to win a third consecutive State of Origin against New South Wales on Wednesday.
The Maroons, who lost to the Blues in the series opener in Sydney, got back into contention with a 30-0 home win in game two.
They have just one win and a draw from their past 13 games in Sydney.
Queensland are unchanged, while NSW have called up Sydney Roosters pair Braith Anasta and Mitchell Pearce.
Canberra's Joel Monaghan, the brother of Warrington half-back Michael, also comes in, while winger Steve Turner and prop Steve Simpson have been replaced by Jarryd Hayne and Ben Cross, who played in game one but were dropped for game two.
The Blues are missing Peter Wallace, Greg Bird and Mark Gasnier through injury and are underdogs after being held scoreless by Queensland in Brisbane earlier this month for only the second time in 83 Origin encounters since 1980.
It will be a special match for hooker Danny Buderus, who will lead NSW for a record 15th and final time before he moves to Super League side Leeds next season.
But Queensland, who had Melbourne centre Greg Inglis in devastating form in the second game, believe they can claim victory in Sydney.
"There is quite a bit of talk about the ground and the fact we don't have a great record there," said scrum-half Scott Prince.
"But if you look at it, plenty of players in this team have won a lot of big games there, so it's not that big a deal.
"We have a lot of guys from Melbourne Storm and the Brisbane Broncos who have won the last two Grand Finals there, so it isn't like it is a ground we hate coming to."

Peel adds to Wales injury worries

Dwayne Peel is the latest Wales injury scare ahead of the Grand Slam winners' bid to beat South Africa in June.
The Scarlets' scrum-half has a shoulder injury that rules him out of Warren Gatland's 24-man training squad.
With Gareth Cooper part of Gloucester's Guinness Premiership play-off push and Mike Phillips out, London Irish's Warren Fury, 22, comes in.
Scarlets full-back Morgan Stoddart and Dragons scrum-half Andy Williams are also fresh faces since the Six Nations.
Gatland said: "Andy Williams and Morgan Stoddart both have a chance to show the coaches what they have to offer and to book themselves a seat on the plane to South Africa.

"Andy and Warren in particular are in with a good shout with two injuries in their position, to Mike Phillips and Dwayne Peel, being a worry for us."
Gatland remains hopeful Peel and ankle-injury victim Gavin Henson will be fit to take on the World Champions.
Henson's regional team-mates Lee Byrne and Sonny Parker will also undergo fitness tests on knee injuries to determine whether or not they should be at the training camp.
Wales will train in Wexford, Ireland for a week from next Monday. If Newport-Gwent Dragons are involved in a Heineken Cup qualification play-off, Williams and Rhys Thomas are likely to be released to their region.
We have been given the opportunity to go on a pre-tour training camp thanks largely to the support of the four regions in Wales
Warren Gatland
Gareth Delve joins Cooper as an absentee due to Gloucester commitments.
Gatland said: "We have been given the opportunity to go on a pre-tour training camp thanks largely to the support of the coaches and management at each of the four regions in Wales.
"This is not something that we will be able to do every year, because I would like to see our regions in contention for end of season honours.
"But, with no European competition left at the end of a tough season and with Leinster runaway leaders of the Magners League, we have been able to negotiate a position which will hopefully be of benefit to everyone.
"The regions have allowed us to take the players away for an intensive period of training in advance of our tour to South Africa and I would like to personally express my gratitude for their co-operation."
Gatland will take his side to a training base in Wexford that specialises in Cryotherapy, which aids the body's recovery from exercise and allows more training.
"This is our core group now, but there may also be one or two other names we add to the tour party injuries permitting and with a couple of players down in England not considered at the moment," added Gatland.
Wales will announce their tour squad on May 14.
Wales training squad:
Backs: Morgan Stoddart, Lee Byrne, Jamie Roberts, Shane Williams, Tom James, Sonny 27-year-old Balshaw, who was a late call-up to the squad, has won 29 caps since making his debut in 2000.
The injuries and illness are just the latest blow for Ashton, who is already set to field a very under-strength team against the Springboks with about 30 first-choice players missing.
The struggling world champions have not won away from Twickenham for 15 months, while from Hook cost the Ospreys, and a Parks try on the stroke of half time kept the tie alive.
A sustained Glasgow attack was rewarded with a Graeme Morrison try, Parks' conversion drawing things level, then a 67th-minute, 50m Parks penalty won it.

The victory was the fourth league triumph in a row for the in-form Scots and the Ospreys' first defeat in the competition in seven games.
The visitors had a dream start at a sandy and parched Hughenden, Williams presented with an overlap from the first move of the game and taking the outside of Thom Evans for a lightning try.
James Hook converted from the touchline, and added a penalty against two successful kicks from opposing outside-half Parks.
But it was the Ospreys number 10 who was lighting up the field, picking the narrowest of gaps in midfield with a devastating break before sending Byrne under the posts.
Hook somehow missed the simple conversion, though, an energetic charge from Rory Lamont shaking the half-back's usual composure.
Glasgow fought back, prompting a string of Ospreys indiscretions that resulted in a sin-binning for Adam Jones, Parks landing the resultant penalty from under the posts.
Hook knocked over a difficult kick to extend the lead to 18-9, then, as the home side increased the pressure on the depleted Ospreys, Parks threw an interception pass that was seized upon by Williams.
The Wales wing pounced, outpacing Hefin O'Hare from 80m out for a try that Hook again failed to convert.
The outside-half went off temporarily with a head injury, and with his first touch replacement Shaun Connor added a penalty.
A quickly taken penalty saw Glasgow mount a sustained attack that ended with Graeme Beveridge setting up Parks from short range, the latter's conversion reducing the gap to 26-16 at the break.
Wales summer tourist Brent Cockbain went off at half-time with a leg injury, and Parks went on to bring the home side back to within a score with his fourth penalty.
The home side encamped on the Ospreys line as the visitors went into their shells, and the reward finally came as Morrison sneaked over in the corner.
Parks converted from the touchline, then added the long-range winning kick after Alun Wyn-Jones offended at a ruck.
Glasgow closed the game down effectively in the final minutes, Hook missing touch with a late penalty to try to set up a winning position.
The Ospreys will now have to rely on results involving the Blues and Leinster going their way, and can only concentrate on winning next week's games at the Dragons and Border Reivers.
Glasgow: type='text'>RFU warns off French in cup row

The Rugby Football Union (RFU) has told the French clubs to stop interfering in their negotiations with Premier Rugby over the future of the Heineken Cup.
Premier Rugby, representing England's top clubs, wants a direct stake in the competition, a move opposed by the RFU.
RFU chairman Martyn Thomas said the two sides were close to securing a long term agreement for the English game.
"It is wholly inappropriate for (French clubs' body) LNR to be seeking a voice in these negotiations," he said.
"Our agreement with PRL (Premier Rugby Ltd) still has two years to run, and under that agreement they have committed to participation in ERC competitions."
Thomas added the two sides had reached "heads of agreement stage".
France's 14 top-flight clubs have pulled out of next season's tournament, blaming the RFU over their refusal to hand over shares and voting rights in European Rugby Cup Ltd to England's leading clubs.
However, domestic fixture congestion in France caused by the World Cup is seen by many as the major reason for the planned withdrawal.
"We wait to hear from LNR if they are going to participate in next year's ERC competitions," said Thomas.
"If they do not compete, we are looking to the FFR (Federation Francaise de Rugby) to nominate other French teams to participate."
Thomas added that a "very constructive meeting" took place on Friday between himself, other senior RFU figures and top figures in the French Federation.
If French clubs carry out their threat to pull out, it is conceivable that both the Heineken Cup and the Challenge Cup could be cut to 16 teams next season.
<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://www.better-poker.co.uk/betterbet-blog/rugby/2007/03/rfu-warns-off-french-in-cup-row.html' title='RFU warns off French in type='text'>England bring forward team naming

Wilkinson is due to play for Newcastle on SundayEngland will announce their team to face Ireland on Tuesday in the hope that the players will be rested by their Premiership clubs this weekend.
Coach Brian Ashton was due to announce the team next week ahead of the game at Croke Park on Saturday 24 February.
The announcement has now been brought forward so the clubs know the identity of the players Ashton wants rested.
"What Brian would like, quite rightly, is the starting XV not to have to play," elite director Rob Andrew said.
The clubs are required to release England players a week before an international match.
Andrew told BBC Sport: "The biggest issue is that there are three Premiership games on Sunday.
"It will mean (the players involved) won't do a great deal on Monday or Tuesday, will train Wednesday and go to Dublin on Thursday."
There are three Premiership matches on Sunday - Bristol v Newcastle, Saracens v Gloucester and Wasps v Sale.
Fourteen of the players who could be in the England squad, including skipper Phil Vickery and fly-half Jonny Wilkinson, play for those teams.
Ireland's players will not have played for the two weeks between their defeat by France last Sunday and the England game.
They are centrally contracted and the Irish Union can decide when they play, with the emphasis on peaking for international matches.
"Whereas This is international rugby and he deserves no more special attention than anyone else because of who he is. Any player would get the same treatment," said the 24-year-old Scottish Borders player.

"Just because he has had injuries in the past doesn't mean I am going to give him special treatment this weekend - that's just not my style.

"So, if I get a chance to smash him, then I will - but I'm not specifically going out there to target doing that.

"I don't try to play differently depending on who the opposition is. despite being overlooked for the Six Nations.

Head coach Brian Ashton has opted for Harry Ellis, Shaun Perry and Peter Richards ahead of the Harlequins star.

But Gomarsall, with 23 caps for his country, told BBC Sport: "I still have something to offer and I'm ready and waiting if things don't go well.

"I've spoken to Brian and I know there is a chance. He told me I'd just missed out, and I've still got the hunger."

A member of England's World-Cup winning squad in 2003, Gomarsall, 32, has been in great form for Quins.

But he was very nearly left on the scrapheap after being surprisingly axed by Worcester on the eve of the 2006/2007 season.

Offered the chance by director of rugby Dean Richards to resurrect his career at Quins, he grabbed it with both hands.

If England want to play some rugby - and under Brian Ashton I think they do - they need a 9 or 10 who is going to make some decisions

Andy Gomarsall

"I'm so grateful to the club and Dean for giving me the opportunity," said Gomarsall. "I have hopefully gone some way to repaying their faith."

The former Wasps, Gloucester and Worcester star has played his part in the club's surge up the Premiership table after they began their first season back in the top flight in less than convincing fashion.

Now he is looking to make an impact with England again.

"Quins wanted me because of my experience and they wanted me to be a decision-maker," said Gomarsall.

"They wanted me to lead from the front, which I think I have done."

He also believes England need someone like him to direct operations behind the scrum and thinks the number nine shirt is still up for grabs.

Gomarsall's contract with Quins runs out at the end of the season

"I think there are a lot of leaders but there hasn't been much decision-making in the last couple of games," he said.

"If England want to play some rugby - and under Brian Ashton I think they do - they need a nine or 10 who is going to make some decisions.

"But if the 10 is inexperienced and not a decision-maker, then they need a nine who is going to do that.

"That's what I've said to Brian. I think we are on similar levels, so I'm excited about it.

"I understand I am not going to be the future. Time has obviously got to be invested in some of the young guys coming through.

"But it is the World Cup in nine months and I'm one of the most experienced out there at the moment.

"I've just got to keep putting in the performances for Harlequins. If I keep doing that, then I've got a chance.

"I can't play as many games as I used to and the game is getting harder and harder, but I'm definitely keen.

My game is really flourishing... when I've got a smile on my face that's when I'm at my best

Andy Gomarsall

"It's World Cup year and it's a fantastic tournament. I want to play in it and I'll do anything I can to make sure I'm in the right state to get there."

Gomarsall had hoped to be involved in Ashton's first squad and was disappointed when he was not included.

"I tried not to be but I felt things were going well," he said. "I had all the right messages and all the right vibes.

"But I'm very quick to get rid of that disappointment and pick myself up."

Quins boss Richards certainly felt the player should have been called up by Ashton, who has only just begun his tenure as England coach after being picked to replace Andy Robinson.

In turn, Gomarsall has heaped praise on Richards and insists he should take a lot of credit for his renaissance following his shock exit from Worcester.

Dean Richards won 48 caps playing in England's forward pack

He is also backing Richards for a managerial role with England, saying his experience and know-how would be an important addition to the national set-up.

"He knows what works, so I would be an advocate," said Gomarsall.

"He has been there, done that and got the T-shirt.

"What he's doing with Harlequins is fantastic. All the guys here are happy and want to produce the goods. I know I'm really enjoying myself.

"When I've got a smile on my face that's when I'm at my best. My game is really flourishing. I just want to keep fit and keep knocking on the door with England."

Gomarsall may well be the best at present and this reflects very badly on the rest

BT

Gomarsall is also keen to stay with Quins when his deal runs out at the end of the season.

"I haven't made any decisions yet," said Gomarsall. "All I can say is that I'm absolutely loving it at Quins.

"The club is going places. It would be a very good decision for me to stay, but I'm coming to the end of my career now, so we'll see what happens."

Lewsey praises 'visionary' Ashton

Ashton needs to point England in a new direction after a dire run

England and Wasps back Josh Lewsey has welcomed the appointment of Brian Ashton as England's new head coach.

Former attack coach Ashton was appointed on Wednesday to replace ex-boss Andy Robinson.

"It is no secret that I am a big fan of Brian's - I've championed him for a long time," Lewsey told BBC Sport.

"He's certainly a visionary. Brian challenges people to think slightly outside the box - he will want to put his own stamp on things."

Ashton has spoken of his desire to free England from their conservative mindset and style of play.

However, Lewsey said the idea that Ashton only advocates a wide game fails to understand the coach's real vision.

In many ways Brian has been a shining light in a period of English rugby where there has been a lot of conservatism

England back Josh Lewsey

"I think people incorrectly label him as the advocate of 'sevens' rugby," said Lewsey, who first met Ashton when he was 18 and Ashton tried to persuade him to join Bath.

"He's actually an advocate of people taking responsibility and playing what they see in front of them, which is the key to playing exciting and challenging rugby, both defensively and offensively."

Since winning the World Cup, England's form has fallen away dismally and the mood around the team has not always been positive.

Robinson eventually paid the price for a run of eight defeats in nine games but Lewsey said it would be simplistic to blame the ex-coach for all the team's ills.

"The issues that have been implicated in England's performances run a lot deeper than just one person at the top," said Lewsey.

"I know within the management set-up they're looking at doing things slightly differently and as players you always welcome a bit of a change.

"In many ways Brian has been a shining light in a period of English rugby where there has been a lot of place for the start of the 2007 Six Nations, says Rob Andrew.
"If you are a betting man you would think it is highly likely (no-one will be appointed by 3 February)," said the Rugby Football Union's elite director.
Andrew, who has ruled himself out of the running to succeed Andy Robinson, also said the RFU are looking for a manager rather than a coach.
England kick off their 2007 Six Nations campaign at home to Scotland.

Robinson, 42, was axed on Wednesday after winning just nine of his 22 games in charge.
A host of names have been linked with the England job, including World Cup-winning captain Martin Johnson, former South Africa coach Nick Mallett, Harlequins coach Dean Richards and former Wasps and Ireland coach Warren Gatland.

But Andrew says the RFU will not be rushed into making an appointment, despite next year's World Cup in France less than 10 months away.<br We cannot afford to do that against better opposition."
Jones was upbeat after being cleared to resume full training on Monday.
"There was no way I could play against Canada, but I'm back to full fitness now and I haven't lost any aerobic fitness because I have still been able to run in a straight line - lateral movement was the problem," said Jones.
"There's a realistic chance of us beating New Zealand. We ran them close two years ago and we want to play the Welsh way, be positive and attack from all areas.
"Against France, New Zealand were excellent, efficient and ruthless in the contact area - they turned France over if they didn't commit enough men to the breakdown.
"But we play a different way, move the ball around and will look to take the game to the All Blacks.
"We've improved every week through the autumn and take in a lot of self belief."

Long leaves GB Tri-Nations tour

Long had been one of the Lions' star performersGreat Britain's half-back Sean Long has flown home from the tour of Australia and New Zealand - I have asked the New Zealand management to investigate Aaron Mauger's comments and to take the appropriate action."
Mauger's comments, which have received widespread coverage in New Zealand, concern the fixture in November last season which the All Blacks won 23-19.
"In terms of the crowd, I think there were a few racial remarks made to a few of our boys last year," he said.
"And a few of the guys took exception to it, which is fair enough because there is no place for that in sport.
"It seemed to be the Island guys who got picked on."
We have every respect for the English and we share the RFU's zero tolerance for racism in the game
All Blacks manager Darren Shand
The comments are sure to raise tensions ahead of Sunday's fixture, which is being held to celebrate the opening of Twickenham's South Stand.
Mauger has been paired with Ma'a Nonu in midfield for the game.
"Unfortunately there is always a small number of fans who lack sportsmanship," added Shand. "That's true all around the world, including New Zealand.
"All fans should support their team, but a small minority can get carried away and direct comments at the opposition.
"This happens at almost every match we play, including last year's Test at Twickenham.
"The England team was not involved in any way. We have every respect for the English and we share the RFU's zero tolerance for racism in the game.
"We encourage English fans to support their team this weekend and New Zealand fans to alarmed by the rise in violent incidents in grassroots rugby.
The Welsh Rugby Union has promised to crack down on ill-discipline among youth players, parents and coaches.
In the 2005/6 season the WRU under-19 disciplinary committee dealt with 139 sendings off and 100 cases of abuse of referees or breaches of conduct.
"A respect for the laws of the game and for all players, referees and officials is part of our job," Jenkins said.
Particularly worrying for the WRU is the poor example being set by some coaches to their young charges.
One coach had to be dragged off the pitch after abusing an opposition player in an under-11 match.
Jenkins added: "It is worrying to learn that coaches are responsible for a large percentage of recent breaches of the Union's code of conduct.
"A coach's role, particularly where young people are concerned is to nurture talent, to bring out the best in all players and to be a role model at all times."

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://www.better-poker.co.uk/betterbet-blog/rugby/2006/10/jenkins-calls-for-coach-control.html' title='Jenkins
